La TOHU's rise to prominence fits perfectly with the local and international mobilization of sustainable development and social economy initiatives. A growing number of individuals and organizations are responding to market globalization, poverty and the depletion of natural resources by adopting practices that encourage development in a way that respects human beings and the environment.

These movements' rise in recognition and popularity over the last decade illustrate a worldwide interest in alternatives that embrace the values of respect, equality, solidarity and cultural diversity.

Each year, a number of prizes and awards are granted to people and organizations that make sustainable development a central part of their personal or corporate philosophy. Besides contributing to awareness building among the public, these awards reflect the general enthusiasm for sustainable development and the hope it stirs in communities.
